22 Jul A New Space, A New Season
TheatreFIRST is delighted to announce its new home (finally!) and its upcoming 2009-10 season.
Starting in October, TheatreFIRST will be performing at the Marion E. Greene Theatre, part of the Fox Theatre building in downtown Oakland. This excellently located, fully equipped black box theatre is the perfect venue for TheatreFIRST’s intimately staged productions. Just two blocks from BART and central to Oakland’s nascent arts district, this is exactly the type of space we have been searching for. TheatreFirst looks forward to being a vital part of Oakland’s downtown renaissance, and to producing great theatre in its new home for many seasons to come. Many thanks to Oakland School for the Arts for making possible this exciting new chapter in TheatreFIRST’s development!
And with the new space comes our new season, opening in October 2009:
First up will be Stones In His Pockets by Marie Jones, directed by Artistic Director Michael Storm. This funny, poignant play is a tour de force for two actors, and explores life in rural Ireland when an American film crew invades. Our next production, in early 2010, will be Tom Stoppard’s brilliant modern classic Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, directed by Marybeth Cavanaugh. This maelstrom of metaphysics, existentialism, and vaudevillian slapstick takes off from Shakespeare’s masterpiece, Hamlet, and never looks back. Our final offering, in spring 2010, will be The Drawer Boy by Michael Healey (director to be announced). This poignant tale of memory and the loss of love beautifully demonstrates how art helps to define our lives.
Subscriptions will be going on sale soon and our September fundraiser is currently in the works. So if you’re not on our email list, click on Contact now and make sure you are the first to be notified when subscriptions become available, and to hear the latest news about exciting events at TheatreFIRST, Oakland’s resident professional theatre company. And if you absolutely cannot wait, stop by our booth at Art & Soul Oakland and say hello to Artistic Director, Michael Storm.
This promises to be a very exciting time for TheatreFIRST all the way around.
You will want to be a part of this!
