TheatreFIRST breaks down its doors with THE FARM, a song-poem-beat-opera adaption of George Orwell’s ANIMAL FARM. Originally commissioned and performed at Shotgun Players, TheatreFIRST redevelops this classic cautionary tale of animal uprising to address our own experiences of oppression and maybe most importantly, the oppressor inside us all.

THE FARM

A Song-Poem-Beat-Opera adaptation of George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”

Berkeley, CA, September 18, 2017 – TheatreFIRST opens its second season of in-house new works with the The Farm, written by Jon Tracy, directed by Michael Torres and Elena Wright, arrangements by Carlos Aguirre and Stephanie Prentice, and choreography by Liz Tenuto. Originally commissioned and performed at Shotgun Players, TheatreFIRST redevelops this song-poem-beat-opera of animal uprising to address our own experiences of oppression and maybe most importantly, the oppressor inside us all. Called “a cautionary tale with showbiz pizzazz” (Robert Hurwitt, San Francisco Chronicle) and “a seething hip-hop, postapocalyptic, dystopian fantasy — and it works” (Nathaniel Eaton, SF Weekly), The Farm takes a peek into what director Elena Wright describes as what “could be an outcome of our current political situation.”

The cast of The Farm features Tierra Allen, Anthony Aranda, Dameion Brown, Laura Espino, Anna Joham, Dean Koya, Celeste Martore, Molly O’Brien, Stephanie Prentice*, Marlon Richardson, Dezi Soley, Jesse Vaughn, and Danie Citlali Valdivieso. The Farm creative team includes scenic design by Randy Wong-Westbrooke, costume design by Miyuki Bierlien, lighting design by Stephanie Anne Johnson, sound design by Kristoffer Barrera, property design by Ting Na, and stage management by Liz Johnson.

TheatreFIRST seeks to revolutionize the intersection of audience, artist and activism. Now an all in-house development company, our staff, board, artists, creative and production teams are built to lift the marginalized stories we are dedicated to amplifying. Making theatre a place where social justice happens means breaking down perceived barriers so that we might all explore an equitable world.

The Farm runs October 12th-November 11th, 2017. Opening Night is October 15th at 7:00pm. Tickets are $15-$25 and available at www.theatrefirst.com.
