13 Feb TheaterFIRST announces 2010-2011 season; tickets now available
TheatreFIRST, Oakland’s resident professional theatre company, today announced its 2010-2011 season featuring a contemporary comedy steeped in Russian theatre history, a Tony Award-winning theatrical version of a classic American novel, and the Bay Area premiere of the story of a wounded Marine returning to her home in California.
Oakland, Calif., July 15, 2010—TheatreFIRST today announced its 2010/2011 season. The season features Anton In Show Business, by Jane Martin, directed by Artistic Director Michael Storm, Sept. 3 – Sept 26, 2010; The Grapes of Wrath, by Frank Galati, directed by Jon Tracy, Jan. 28- Feb. 20, 2011; and Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter, by Julie Marie Myatt, May 27 – June 19, 2011. The lineup marks TheatreFIRST’s second season in its new home, the Marion E. Greene Black Box Theatre at 531 19th Street, on the ground floor of The Fox Oakland Building in downtown Oakland.
Anton In Show Business, written by Jane Martin (directed by Michael Storm, Artistic Director), is a madcap comedic romp following the trials and tribulations of three actresses cast in an ill-fated production of Chekhov’s classic, Three Sisters. Winner of the American Theatre Critics Steinberg New Play Award, Anton In Show Business looks at what it takes to produce theatre in the modern era and is a tour de force for seven fantastic actresses.
The Grapes of Wrath, based on John Steinbeck’s classic novel, is adapted by Frank Galati of the Steppenwolf Theatre, and directed by Jon Tracy. This Tony Award-winning theatrical version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel tells the story of migrant farm workers searching for the American Dream in California. The combination of Jon Tracy and John Steinbeck is a perfect fit for TheatreFIRST’s bold new direction and its commitment to include California- and Oakland-based material in its programming.
The season closes with the Bay Area premiere of Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter, by Julie Marie Myatt, directed by Domenique Lozano. After losing a leg in the Iraq war, combat veteran Jenny Sutter returns to California with a sense that she no longer belongs. She finds herself in a makeshift community of misfits and outcasts who help her on the long road back home. Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter premiered at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and moved to the Kennedy Center as part of the Kennedy Center Fund For New American Plays.
Artistic Director Michael Storm had this to say about the season, “Once again we have three fantastic and award-winning plays, and this season every production will feature a culturally diverse cast. “Jon Tracy, a Bay Area Native and one of the most prolific director/writers in the region, is set to direct The Grapes of Wrath and we have Domenique Lozano back to direct in the Spring, as she did this year with this season’s surprise hit The Drawer Boy. We are very excited.”
