24 Aug Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter
May 26 – June 19, 2011
BAY AREA PREMIERE!!
Written by Julie Marie Myatt
Directed by Domenique Lozano
After losing a leg in the Iraq war, combat veteran Jenny Sutter returns to California with a sense that she no longer belongs. She finds herself in a makeshift community of misfits and outcasts who help her on the long road back home.
Domenique Lozano, director of last season’s highly successful production, The Drawer Boy, returns with her unique brand of storytelling to take on this poignant comedy. The cast also features some of the best acting talent in the Bay Area, including Nancy Carlin (Cal Shakes, Aurora Theatre Company, SF Playhouse) who will play the role of Lou, an odd, quircky character who has given up everything in her life that causes confusion. In Lou, Jenny finds a unique friendship and ultimately the strength to make the difficult journey home. Omoze Idehenre, who was most recently seen on the American Conservatory Stage in Clybourne Park, Scapin and The Caucasian Chalk Circle will take on the role of Jenny Sutter.
With the character of Jenny, Ms. Myatt sets out to investigate the effects of war on the individual and in particular the return home, but her plan is also to help us understand that this is going to be a real issue for quite some time. “I began writing Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter in 2006, with several questions in mind; As a nation at war, how are we treating our returning veterans? Are we ready for the first generation of women veterans wounded and maimed by combat?” This wonderful script debuted at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and subsequently went on to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., as part of the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays. As is so often the case with TheatreFIRST shows it is difficult to pin this play down…is it a drama or a comedy…? We’re not sure, but we know we have a terrific script, an amazing director and a stellar cast, so we also know you are going to love it! Join us for a great evening of theatre!
