13 Feb TheatreFIRST announces director Domenique Lozano for Bay Area premiere of Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter, by Julie Marie Myatt

The third show of TheatreFIRST’S 10/11 season will open May 27th at The Marion E. Greene Black Box Theatre, 531 19th Street, on the ground floor of The Fox Oakland Building.

Oakland, Calif., April 1, 2011 – TheatreFIRST today announced that Domenique Lozano will direct the third and final show of its 10/11 season, the Bay Area premiere of Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter, by noted playwright Julie Marie Myatt.

This powerful play tells the story of a combat veteran who has lost a leg in the Iraq war and returns to California with a sense that she no longer belongs. Jenny Sutter finds herself in a makeshift community of misfits and outcasts who help her on the long road back home.

The play will open May 27th, 2011, in The Marion E. Greene Black Box Theatre at 531 19th Street on the ground floor of The Fox Oakland Building. The show runs Thursday through Saturday evenings at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2 pm, through Sunday, June 19th. Tickets start at $10 and are on sale now at brownpapertickets.com.

Lozano is an Associate Artist at the American Conservatory Theatre and the California Shakespeare Theatre, and directed last season’s The Drawer Boy for TheatreFIRST. She has directed ACT’s Main Stage production of A Christmas Carol for the past two seasons and adapted Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle for ACT. Other directing credits include The Countess with Center REPertory Company, Two for the Seesaw with Marin Theatre Company, Inspecting Carol and the West Coast premiere of Jane Martin’s Anton in Show Business with San Jose Stage Company, and The Norman Conquests, Holiday, The Real Thing, and She Loves Me with Napa Valley Repertory Theatre, of which she was a founding member and Associate Artistic Director. Acting credits include work with such theatres as Cal Shakes, ACT, Berkeley Rep, San Jose Repertory Theatre, San Jose Stage Company, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Julie Marie Myatt’s Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter premiered at Oregon Shakespeare Festival and a tour of that production went on to the Kennedy Center as part of the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays. Her play Boats On A River, which was commissioned by and premiered at the Guthrie Theatre, was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, and was recorded for the LA Theatre Works radio play series. Her play My Wandering Boy premiered at South Coast Rep, and was featured in the 2007 Summer Play Festival in New York City. Her ten-minute play, Mr. and Mrs., premiered at the 2007 Humana Festival. Her play The Sex Habits of American Women was produced by the Guthrie Theatre, among others, and premiered at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco. Her work has been developed or seen at Denver Center Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Seattle Rep, Cherry Lane, A.S.K. Theatre Projects, LAByrinth Theatre Company, among others. She received a Walt Disney Studios Screenwriting Fellowship, a Jerome Fellowship at the Playwrights’ Center, and a McKnight Advancement Grant. She is currently working on commissions for Denver Center Theatre, ACT Seattle, and Roundabout Theatre. She is a resident member of New Dramatists.

Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter will run Thursday through Saturday evenings at 8:00pm with Sunday Matinees at 2pm from May 27th through June 19th  (preview May 26th). Tickets are $30 for Fridays, Saturday and Sundays, and $25 on Thursday evenings. Patrons under the age of 30 pay only $15 for regular performances.
